Independent Skilled Migration (189)

Australia’s 189 Independent Skilled Visa is a permanent residence visa that does not require sponsorship by an Australian employer or relative, nor nomination by an Australian state or territory. Once approved for the 189 visa, holders can live, study, and work anywhere in Australia indefinitely. The visa also allows holders to sponsor eligible relatives for Australian migration and apply for Australian citizenship if they meet the requirements.

Eligibility Requirements for 189 Visa

  • Age: Must be under 45 years old.

  • Occupation: The nominated occupation must be on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List), and the applicant must have passed a relevant skills assessment.

  • Points Requirement: A minimum of 65 points on the points test.

  • English Proficiency: IELTS with at least 4 band 6 or equivalent; results must be valid within 3 years.

  • Expression of Interest (EOI): Must submit an EOI and receive an invitation to apply.
  • Health and Character Requirements: Must meet health and character requirements, with no criminal record.

  • Submit EOI: Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect system and wait for an invitation.

  • Receive Invitation: Once invited, you have 60 days to submit the 189 visa application.

  • Medical Examination: Complete the required health examinations.

  • Visa Processing: Wait for the visa application to be assessed and approved.

  • Grant of Visa: Receive the 189 visa and gain permanent residency in Australia.
